The college has a unit of the National Service Scheme.  The NSS unit facilitates training for 100 students in social work.  The unit is under the supervision of  Mr.Rakesh Kalia, Department of Hindi and Ms. Mercy Ignatius , Department of Zoology who holds the charges of Program Officers. 

 

Report of the NSS Regular Activities  in 2003-04

The NSS unit of the college has undertaken a number of programmes keeping in mind the basic goals of National Service Scheme which is to make education more community-oriented and responsive to the social realities around them. The unit shouldered the responsibility of arranging 12 major programs including the 10-day special camp at GHS Neervaram during the Christmas vacation. The major activities of the unit are given below

 

 AIDS Day campaign

A campaign was organized in the college on December 1, 2003, the World AIDS Day. Red ribbons prepared the NSS volunteers were  worn by the   staff  and students. Dr. Abdul Majeed, Medical Officer, District Hospital, Mananthavady, spoke on AIDS and its  challenges.

Annual  NSS camp 

                     The annual camp for the NSS volunteers was held in GHS Neervaram from 19th to 28th December, 2003. District Panchayat President, Mr. K K Ahmed, inaugurated the camp.

 Wayanad District Collector, Mr. K. Gopalan, was the chief guest on the occasion. Fifty-three NSS volunteers took part in the camp. The campers completed a check dam across the Kabani river, repaired roads and prepared a volleyball court with the help and  support of the people of the locality.

 

Blood grouping camp

A free blood grouping camp was organized  in the college in collaboration with Mananthavady Jaycees on August 29, 2003. Dr. Nita Sukumaran, Medical Officer, District Hospital, Mananthavady, delivered a lecture on the relevance of blood donation.

 

Nature camp

          A three-day residential nature camp was held in Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary from 20th to 22nd February, 2004. Forty-eight NSS volunteers attended the   camp. The activities in the camp included trekking, classes, quiz, discussions, film shows and cultural activities.

 

Anti-tobacco & anti-drugs campaign

            An anti-tobacco and anti-drugs  campaign was arranged in the  campus on November11, 2003 in collaboration with ICPF, Changanassery. Along with classes, a film on the above topic was also screened.

 

Orientation program

A one-day orientation program was held at the college on October 25, 2003. Dr. Abraham Joseph from Pius X College, Rajapuram was the resource person and 120 NSS volunteers took part. Dr. Fr. James Maruthukunnel , our Principal, inaugurated the meeting. The Program Officer, Sri Shaju P. P. and  NSS  Student Secretary, Mr. Anil Jose George spoke on the occasion.
